Oudenaarde and surroundings

Oudenaarde, Town of the Scheldt, also called "Le Petit Bruges", is a historical town, located on the banks of the Scheldt and beautifully surrounded by the hills of the Flemish Ardennes. Louis XIV found love and passion here, the famous painter Adriaan Brouwer grew up here among the tapestry weavers. The town encompasses over 100 buildings, classified as cultural heritage.

We are volunteers at the local Fair Trade store and gladly recommend a visit to the store located nearby: Kattestraat 9.

Several breweries are still producing delicious beer in Oudenaarde:

  • Roman
  • Cnudde

According to a legend from the 16th century, when Louis XIV was visiting Oudenaarde, the town watchman Hanske De Krijger drank too much of Oudenaarde's beer, and thus overlooked announcing the arrival of Louis XIV.
As a punishment for this oversight, the escutcheon of Oudenaarde had to include a pair of glasses. However, it is now known that this symbol on the shield were not glasses but the gothic letter A of Audenaerde, the name of the town in the old spelling.
